Common Pediatric Eye Conditions and How They Are Treated

Dec 17, 2024

At Vision Center South, we believe that clear vision is the foundation of a child’s success, both academically and socially. Early pediatric eye care plays a crucial role in identifying and treating potential vision problems before they can impact a child’s development. Since children often don’t recognize or communicate vision issues, regular eye exams are essential to detect and address problems early.

The Importance of Early Pediatric Eye Care

Children often can’t articulate vision problems, which makes regular pediatric eye exams essential. Detecting eye issues early not only helps correct vision but can also prevent complications that may affect academic performance, social development, and quality of life. We recommend children have their first comprehensive eye exam at six months, another at three years, again at the age of 5 or 6, then annually thereafter.

Let’s explore some of the most common pediatric eye conditions and the effective treatments available to ensure your child’s vision stays healthy.

Amblyopia (Lazy Eye)

Amblyopia occurs when one eye doesn’t develop proper vision, usually due to misalignment or a significant difference in prescription between the two eyes. The brain begins to favor the stronger eye, leading to impaired vision in the weaker eye.

Treatment:

•          Patching: Covering the stronger eye with a patch encourages the weaker eye to work harder.

•          Corrective Lenses: Glasses or contact lenses can correct refractive errors contributing to amblyopia.

•          Medical Drops: Atropine drops blur vision in the stronger eye to encourage use of the weaker eye.

Strabismus (Crossed or Misaligned Eyes)

Strabismus occurs when the eyes are misaligned and don’t work together. This condition may be constant or intermittent and can lead to amblyopia if untreated.

Treatment:

•          Glasses: Corrective lenses can help align the eyes in some cases.

•          Prism Lenses: These can reduce double vision associated with strabismus.

Refractive Errors (Nearsightedness, Farsightedness, and Astigmatism)

Refractive errors occur when the shape of the eye prevents light from focusing correctly on the retina, causing blurry vision.

Treatment:

•          Prescription Glasses or Contacts: The most common and effective way to correct refractive errors in children.

•          Routine Eye Exams: Regular checkups ensure prescriptions are updated as the child grows.

Conjunctivitis (Pink Eye)

Conjunctivitis is the inflammation of the conjunctiva, the clear tissue covering the white part of the eye and the inside of the eyelid. It can be caused by bacteria, viruses, or allergies.

Treatment:

•          Bacterial Conjunctivitis: Antibiotic eye drops or ointments are typically prescribed.

•          Viral Conjunctivitis: This type often resolves on its own, but cool compresses can provide relief.

•          Allergic Conjunctivitis: Antihistamine or anti-inflammatory eye drops help reduce symptoms.

Chalazion (Eyelid Bump)

A chalazion is a small bump on the eyelid caused by a blocked oil gland. While generally not painful, it can become swollen and interfere with vision.

Treatment:

•          Warm Compresses: Applied multiple times a day to help the gland drain naturally.
